Taster day and training courses for new officials

Our club competes widely in track and field athletics. At each fixture, participating clubs are expected to supply their share of officials. Generally, this means a field team who can take charge of any of the eight field events, plus track officials and timekeepers. The promoting club will be required to provide, in addition, a chief timekeeper, a track referee, field referee, starter team and more.

Barnet & District AC has an excellent team of dedicated officials and they are active in the Track and Field leagues where we compete, for young athletes, seniors and veterans, and elsewhere. Our club president, Chris Stott, served as a senior official at the Olympic Games in London in 2012. In the winter there are the indoor meetings as well as Cross Country fixtures.

But as well as being very busy, ours is an ageing team. More than half of our officials are now in their 70s. We therefore need some new blood.

Why Officiate? There’s a whole host of motivations why people officiate in athletics:

o    You may want to give something back to the sport you love;
o    You may be currently injured and want to still be involved in your club;
o    You may want to help improve your knowledge of athletics and improve your skills;
o    It’s a great way to become involved with your local community, meet people and make new friends;
o    You will get to experience the sport from a different angle;

Officiating also provides an opportunity to:

o    Learn new skills, levels of responsibility and much more;
o    Undertake accredited training; and
o    Get a reference; employers are generally impressed by the skills and commitment of volunteers.

Would you like to join the club’s team of officials? It’s important and interesting work, it’s at the heart of athletics, and it’s very friendly and sociable. You will be welcomed warmly. There are training courses and lots of help.

Indeed, the next round of ‘entry level’ courses will be held quite soon, on Saturday 7th October at Allianz Park, Greenlands Lane, Hendon NW4 1RL:

Time                  Course                                       Course Number

In addition, many of the club’s officials will be at the final Southern Athletics League fixture of this season, at Watford on Saturday 19 August, from midday. If you would like to join the team for the day, or half the day, or just for an hour or so, you will be most welcome. It’s an opportunity to have a “taster session”. You will be able to see what’s involved, how it all works and what we do.

If you are interested in attending any of the courses above, or coming along to the ‘taster day’ at Watford, or just want to know more about being an official, please contact me!
