19th – Round Rotherham 50
Report from Steve Allen – I apologise for not being at the Awards night on Friday but news of my much appreciated “PERFORMANCE of the YEAR” recognition reached me by text as I was preparing to bed down on the floor of Mexbrough Sports Centre in readiness for a 6am start in the annual ROUND ROTHERHAM 50 mile event. I had had a previous attempt at the event as a runner in 2008, popularly known as the “MONSOON YEAR” as it tipped it down from start to finish and turned South Yorkshire in to a bog, (and being in December then most drop-outs like mine were caused by varying degrees of hypothermia).
I race walked this year, much to the embarrassment and/or amazement of those runners we passed and beat, in company with my long-distance training partner the leading ultra walker Suzanne Beardsmore, a 3 time centurion with a 100 mile best of just outside 21 hours. We opted for light-weight racing walking shoes in order to make the most of the tarmac/road/track sections, and consequently slithered around a bit (sometimes a lot) on the fields and muddy tracks – probably the right choice overall. We finished in just a few minutes outside 13 hours and had actually covered about 54 miles with a couple of detours off the correct route (the major one of which was followed by a good part of the field around us). I haven’t seen the actual time yet (or positions) as I had about 30 minutes between finishing and catching a train from Swinton station (a mile away) in order to get back home on Saturday night which I made with 4 minutes to spare with various bits of kit in several bags in hand to re-pack and sort out once on board.
I am due a bit of a rest. On 6th October I raced at 50k in the Dutch National championships and finished 6th (in a race won by a fellow GB athlete, Daniel King, the twin brother of Olympian Dominic who was a DNF here) in 5:40:25 – my second fastest time ever (PB of 5:35:01 when winning the National title in 2012). I then travelled on to SW Poland (where we have a flat in a mountain town as many will know) for a few days walking – including a 9 hour day – before returning to race 3 times on the following weekend – Enfield League at 5.4 miles on the Saturday and both 5k (5th in 28:02) and 10k (3rd in 58:13) in the Midland League on Sunday at Stourport. These were my 62nd, 63rd and 64th competive racewalks of the year (I won’t count Rotherham as 65 because it was a running race!!).

And there’s one of me, Sheila and Tony (I’ve got the FV60 and Tony’s got the MV65 cup), I was the only FV60 running, but I’m very proud of it anyway – Ros

On a pleasant late summer evening – ideal for running – there was a good turn-out of runners chasing late season PB’s , the most successful of whom was Thomas Butler who smashed his 1500m PB by 10 seconds and showed a great turn of pace in the last 500m to tie first in Race 10 in 4-18.28 with an excellent run.
