On a bright blustery day at the exposed open spaces of Wormwood Scrubs (deemed too windy to even attempt to erect the gazebo), a dozen Young Stags took part in the South of England Cross Country Relays. Together they made up four complete teams – the most from Barnet for five years, and, it is thought, the first time that four separate categories have competed.
Teams from as far afield as Norwich, Swindon and Poole were represented, with traditionally strong teams from clubs such as Herne Hill, Blackheath, Reading, Wimborne and Ipswich. Against such opposition, there were no expectations of medals (not this year, anyway). Team instructions were clear – run as well as you can and enjoy yourselves. The instructions were followed to the letter, and everyone enjoyed the experience. There were some great performances and some big smiles.
A successful day on which we can build. Next year even more teams.
