Mud, Glorious Mud! at Epping Forest in the Chingford League

Saturday 17th January morning saw the fifth Chingford League race of the season at Epping Forest. This is widely regarded as the toughest (and one of the best) races of the year and in that regard we were not let down since it proved to be an exceptionally tough race with mud galore causing problems from start to finish even on the flat parts with competitors falling at regular intervals. Many of us did as much slipping and sliding as running (‘mudboarding’ to quote Sarhan) and unusually for this race many of us walked downhill as well as uphill because it was so treacherous; not Charlotte C though who showed no fear on the downhills and was rewarded with a great run.

The course was 2 laps, 8km in total, and included 2 very steep hills, sharp downhills, and lots and lots of mud. The hills proved very challenging for most of us but seemingly not for Kirsty who ran up them with relative ease and consequently had a great race.

At the front of the race our men were led home by Tom T who was clearly thriving in the difficult conditions, followed by Will C with another great run and Carmelo who felt like he was skiing at times. Richard had another superb race and you won’t be surprised to hear is leading the Individual M60 Points Trophy with maximum points to date. Will K and Dave B had great races while Damodar had a fine club debut and Tom D a fine Chingford League debut. It was great to see Pete racing again too after his recent lay off.

In the women’s race, Charlotte M, very much at home in Epping Forest, led our women home with a great run, followed by Jana who clearly loves hills. Charlotte C was our third finisher closely followed by Kathryn who is clearly returning to form. Pear had a good race as well as finding time to help fallen runners to their feet (well done!) and Linda (having shown a great example by marshalling at the Buntingford 10) returned to what she ‘loves’ most which is racing cross country and she did well. Bev and Piji, both recovering from illness, did very well in the circumstances and it was great to see Lynne racing again in the Chingford League.

The encouragement of our many travelling supporters and volunteers (Di, Andy P and Jenny, Sarah, Chloe) was especially welcome. Thank you!

All 44 Stags (compared to 36 the previous year) who competed deserve great praise and it was notable that we were the last to leave the Clubhouse because we were having such a good time sharing stories and wonderful cakes. Great Team Spirit!
